Companion Global Healthcare started out in 2007 working with hospitals in Ireland and Thailand and has since expanded to Brazil, Costa Rica, Germany, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, and the US. At present, followup care upon return from medical travel is provided in South Carolina only, but that may change as Companion Global works with other insurance carriers to expand its activities in support of low-cost, fully credentialed medical travel.

Companion Global’s 24-hour call center offers help to health travelers in 20 languages. The agency’s standard package includes case management, medical record transfer, and travel coordination. Depending on the patient’s diagnosis, treatment, and benefit plan, insurance carriers may pay significant portions of the cost. Uninsured customers and clients of other insurance companies pay overseas providers directly. Companion Global estimates savings on procedures such as hip replacement at 40-85 percent below US prices.
