Catholic Medical Center (CMC) was founded in 1962 to oversee medical education, research, and healthcare conducted and provided by the Catholic Church in Korea. CMC is the largest medical network in the country, currently comprising eight affiliated hospitals and the Catholic University of Korea College of Medicine, for a total of 4,984 beds attended by 1,119 physicians, 830 residents, and 228 interns. It offers a wide variety of services, ranging from routine checkups to specialized diagnosis and treatment, and has treated 5 million outpatients and more than 1.5 million inpatients to date. On average, CMC performs more than 14,000 procedures annually.

CMC’s medical equipment and facilities are continuously upgraded to remain up-to-date in technological advancements. Its centers of excellence include an Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology Center, Organ Transplantation Center, Heart Center, Gynecological Cancer Center, Catholic Cancer Center, Lifestyle Center, Rheumatism Center, CyberKnife Center, and Health Screening Center.

As part of its commitment to top-notch care, CMC sends 35–40 doctors annually to renowned universities in the US, Canada, Germany, and Japan to pursue further studies, conduct research, and build clinical collaborations. CMC also strives to advance the medical sciences and find cures for disease through its nine research institutes.

CMC’s newest member, Catholic University of Korea Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital opened in 2009. It is the single largest hospital in Korea, with 2,000 beds and six core centers: a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Center, Cancer Center, Organ Transplantation Center, Cardiovascular Center, Women’s Cancer Center, and Eye Center. The facility’s state-of-the-art technology includes MRI, PET-CT, and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) CT as well as an angiography unit, TomoTherapy Hi-Art System, x-ray therapy unit, magnetic navigation surgery system, and CyberKnife robotic surgery system. Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital serves as a multiplex hub of medical service, education, and research, providing additional infrastructure to support CMC’s role as a leading global healthcare institution.
