The Philippines

Medical travel is getting a lot of attention in the Philippines these days. In 2004 the Philippine Medical Tourism Program was launched as a public- and private-sector initiative. In 2006 the Philippines held its first-ever convention on medical tourism, with the theme of "Only in the Philippines: Tender Loving (Health) Care." In 2007 the International Medical Travel Journal reported that the Philippines were experiencing a new wave of medical travelers. The nation's former health secretary, Alfredo Bengzon, estimated that 5 percent of admissions at The Medical City in Pasig City were visitors from other countries, and he put the total number of medical travelers at nearly 100,000 annually. The big areas of demand are bariatric surgery, cosmetic surgery, ophthalmology, and dental work.

For those willing to do their homework, there's significant money to be saved. Knee replacement surgery in the Philippines might set you back $6,000, for example, compared to $40,000 or more in the US. And the best hospitals in the Philippines boast facilities and Western-trained physicians comparable to those at desirable medical destinations in other Asian nations. Nurses in the Philippines have earned an international reputation for excellence. So with the Philippines' growing commitment to medical travel, that nation's ability to deliver may better match its promises in the years to come.
