International Medical Travel Conference, Seoul, South Korea—19 November 2008: Healthy Travel Media and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI) jointly announce the launch of Patients Beyond Borders: Korea Edition, published in English for international distribution. Supported by the Council for Korea Medicine Overseas Promotion (CKMP), the 220-page guidebook offers an in-depth overview of Korea’s 23 international hospitals, selected health travel agents, guest accommodations, and essential travel information.
Its four sections provide detailed guidance on budgeting and planning a medical journey; thorough descriptions of fully accredited hospitals catering to the international patient; useful information on traveling in Korea; and extensive resources for medical travelers. Print and electronic versions will be available through retail outlets worldwide, Amazon and other online retailers, and KHIDI and CKMP.
“Korea's favorable climate and relatively short flying times are attracting an increasing number of North American patients,” says author Josef Woodman. “And the more than one million North Americans of Korean descent—many uninsured—are finding Korea a high-quality, affordable alternative to healthcare in the US.”
First known as a destination for Japanese patients seeking affordable cosmetic surgery, Korea now boasts a wide array of medical treatments for patients from all over the globe. The easing of travel and visa regulations, combined with Korea’s fully developed status, is encouraging patients to take advantage of 30–70% savings in some of the world’s most modern, technologically advanced medical facilities. The world’s largest JCI-accredited facility, for example, is Severance Hospital in Seoul, offering 2,000 beds and full international patient services.
“Korea is bringing down its language, culture, and communications barriers, making international travel and healthcare easier for all,” says Dr. Keehyun Earm of KHIDI/CKMP. “We are anticipating over 50,000 medical travelers from 20 countries in 2008.”
