Washington, DC — 8 December 2008: Healthy Travel Media and SingaporeMedicine jointly announce the launch of Patients Beyond Borders: Singapore Second Edition. This book follows the success of the Patients Beyond Borders: Singapore Edition, published in July 2007. The Singapore Second Edition will be introduced at the Health Care Globalization Summit in Washington, DC.
The 250-page guidebook features a fully updated, revised, in-depth overview of Singapore's hospitals and clinics serving international patients, and it now includes 16 pages of color inserts showcasing Singapore's world-class facilities and attractions.
Considered one of the world’s top medical travel destinations, Singapore attracts more than 410,000 international patients to its hospitals and treatment centers and expects that number to grow to 1 million by 2012. The country boasts 13 JCI-accredited healthcare facilities, and its healthcare system was ranked the best in Asia and sixth best in the world by the World Health Organization (the US was ranked thirty-sixth).
“Singapore continues to lead the charge as one of the world’s top medical destinations,” says author Josef Woodman. “With its world-renowned cancer research and regenerative therapies, women’s and pediatric specialty clinics, and specialty Centers of Excellence in cardiology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, dentistry, and more, it’s easy to see why Singapore is the preferred choice for many considering medical travel.”
As the number of uninsured and underinsured Americans continues to grow, travel abroad for treatment is rising dramatically, with international hospitals and clinics reporting 15–40% increases in the number of Americans seeking treatment. More than 180,000 Americans will cross borders for healthcare this year, and that number is expected to nearly double by 2010. In 2009, it is predicated that more than 3 million patients worldwide will travel to another country for a medical procedure.
"The combination of excellent healthcare infrastructure, availability of skilled medical professionals, and the latest medical technology has enabled Singapore to remain on the cutting edge in its healthcare services delivery,” says Dr. Jason Yap, Director of Healthcare Services for the Singapore Tourism Board. “We hope this latest release of the world’s best-selling international medical travel guide will now give patients even greater planning and travel information when selecting Singapore as their medical destination of choice.”
