When the heart’s natural rate-control system fails, a mechanical, battery-driven, device may be implanted in the chest, usually under the clavicle. Wires leading from the generator are placed on the heart muscle to deliver the small amount of electrical current needed to speed up, slow down, or stabilize the heart’s rhythm.
