Baptist Health South Florida

Baptist Health South Florida—the largest faith-based, not-for-profit healthcare organization in the region—has been serving patients outside the US since 1991. The organization’s 2,000 physicians and 14,000 employees handle nearly 900,000 outpatient visits and more than 70,000 inpatients annually throughout its seven hospitals and more than one dozen medical plazas. Baptist Health physicians see about 14,000 international patients each year.

Specialties

Cardiovascular surgery: Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute and South Miami Heart Center at South Miami Hospital offer the services needed to diagnose and treat complex medical and surgical heart-related conditions. Both facilities emphasize a team approach with physicians, surgeons, nurses, and technologists collaborating to provide individualized patient care. In 2011 doctors at Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute became the first in South Florida (and among the first in the US) to use a new, MRI-safe pacemaker.

Neurosurgery: The Neuroscience Center at Baptist Hospital provides diagnosis and treatment for disorders of the brain, spine, and nervous system. The neuroscience team at Baptist Health's Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables, Florida, was the first institution in Florida—and is still one of a few facilities in the US—to offer Gamma Knife radiosurgery.

Oncology: Each year Baptist Health South Florida providers treat more than 5,000 adults and children who have cancer, using sophisticated technology for early, effective diagnosis and treatment. Baptist Health is a major partner in the Tampa-based Moffitt Cancer Center’s landmark study, TotalCancer Care. This five-year study is gathering data on the genetic profile of individual tumors that may lead to personalized treatments for specific types of cancer.

Orthopedics: The Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine based at Doctors Hospital offers an advanced orthopedic surgery program along with comprehensive physical and occupational therapy to promote health, restore function, and improve lifestyle for adults and children. Doctors Hospital orthopedic surgeons are pioneers of new techniques in knee-ligament reconstruction, shoulder and elbow injuries, and ankle reconstruction. The center's surgeons and rehabilitation therapists also serve several professional and college sports teams and athletes.

Emergencies: Baptist Hospital’s Emergency Center, expanded and redesigned in 2008, is the second busiest emergency center in South Florida, handling more than 80,000 patient visits each year. The center has 100 private patient rooms, including 20 located in a separate and specialized Children’s Emergency Center. The hospital’s emergency medicine physicians and nurses have expertise in caring for patients with everything from heart attacks and strokes, breathing disturbances, abdominal pain to cuts and gashes. Trauma rooms equipped with sophisticated technology help doctors and nurses manage the most severe illnesses and injuries in adults and children.
